During Aniplex Online Fest 2023, the production team for the Mashle: Magic and Muscles anime series released rough character design drafts of three new characters, who are all set to appear in the upcoming second season. Season two of Mashle is scheduled to air sometime in January 2024 and adapt The Divine Visionary Candidate Exam Arc.
The new character designs highlight wizards Ryoh Grantz, Orter Madl, and Margarette Macaron.
The 12-episode first season premiered on April 8, 2023 and ended on July 1, 2023. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired in Japan.
The production staff includes Tomoya Tanaka (Engage Kiss) as director, Yousuke Kuroda (My Hero Academia) as series screenwriter and script writer, Hisashi Toujima (Blue Lock chief action director) as character designer, and Masaru Yokoyama (Urusei Yatsura) as music composer. A-1 Pictures is handling the animation production for the anime.
Other staff members include Saki Hisamatsu (Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 dance part animation director) and Gotou Nozomi (Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 dance part animation director) as sub-character designers and Takeshi Matsuda (Record of Grancrest War co-main animator) and Hiroaki Gouda (Amagami SS character designer) as action directors.
Meanwhile, the voice cast consists of Chiaki Kobayashi as Mash Burnedead, Reiji Kawashima as Finn Ames, Kaito Ishikawa as Lance Crown, Takuya Eguchi as Dot Barrett, and Reina Ueda as Lemon Irvine.
Mashle: Magic and Muscles is based on the manga by Hajime Komoto, which was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from January 27, 2020 to July 3, 2023 under the Jump Comics label. Seventeen tankoubon volumes have been released as of July 2023, with the 18th and final volume set for release on October 4, 2023.
Viz Media releases the manga series in English and describes the story as:
Mash just wants to live in peace with his father in the forest. But the only way he’ll ever be accepted in the magic realm is by attending magic school and becoming a Divine Visionary—an exceptional student revered as one the chosen. But without an ounce of magic to his name, Mash will have to punch his way to the top spot.
