The official Twitter account for the live-action One Piece live-action TV series announced that the show will be renewed for a second season. The announcement was confirmed by original series creator Eiichirou Oda in a special video that was posted on the Twitter account and Still Watching Netflix’s YouTube channel.

In the video, Oda also teased the future appearance of Tony Tony Chopper in season two, saying that the “straw hats will need a great doctor” before finishing a rough sketch illustration of the character.

An exact premiere date and production timeline for the second season has yet to be confirmed, due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike currently taking place.

The 8-episode live-action One Piece series first premiered on Netflix on August 31, 2023. It is a co-production with Tomorrow Studios (who also produced Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, Snowpiercer, and Let The Right One In). Steven Maeda (Pan Am) and Matt Owens (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Luke Cage writer) are the showrunners, with Owens also serving as scriptwriter.

The main cast members for the series include Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, Morgan Davies as Koby, Vincent Regan as Monkey D. Garb, and Jeff Ward as Buggy the Clown.

Other cast members include Peter Gadiot as Shanks, Alexander Maniatis as Klahadore, Steven Ward as Mihawk, Craig Fairbrass as Chef Zeff, Langley Kirkwood as Captain Morgan, Celeste Loots as Kaya, and Chioma Umeala as Nojiko.

Oda’s original One Piece manga series was launched in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on July 22, 1997 under the Jump Comics label. A total of 106 tankoubon volumes have been released as of July 2023.

The manga has inspired a 1999 OVA from Production I.G and a long-running TV anime series from Toei Animation that began in 1999. The latter passed the 1000th episode mark on November 21, 2021.
