The official website of the Great Pretender TV anime series has announced that a sequel titled Great Pretender razbliuto will premiere in 2024 worldwide and be screened in North American theaters. During a panel at Anime NYC 2023, the anime’s production staff said it will reveal how much of the anime will be shown in theaters at a later date.
A new key visual and announcement trailer for the sequel anime were also released. The visual highlights the character Dorothy, who is described as a talented swindler.
The anime’s official website also revealed that Crunchyroll will stream the anime in over 200 countries outside of China, while Manga Productions will license the anime in 16 Middle Eastern countries.
Many production staff from the first season are returning to work on Great Pretender razbliuto. Hiro Kaburagi (Great Pretender season 1) is returning as director and also handling the series screenplay with Taku Kishimoto (Ranking of Kings). Previous head screenwriter Ryouta Kosawa (Great Pretender season 1 screenwriter) is now credited as the script supervisor.
Other production changes include Mai Teshima (Great Pretender season 1 Ep 13 and 20 episode director) as assistant director, Shousuke Ishibashi and Hirotaka Katou as chief animation directors, and Yumiko Sudou (Great Pretender season 1 image board co-artist) and Yuusuke Takeda as art directors. Yutaka Yamada is also returning form the first season as the music composer. WIT Studio is once again the animation production company.
More details about Great Pretender razbliuto will be revealed on November 18, 2023 at Anime NYC, during a panel with anime director Kaburagi, WIT Studio president George Wada and Production I.G producer Hitoshi Ito. An advance screening of the anime will also be screened.
The Great Pretender anime premiered in July 2020 on Fuji TV’s +UItra programming block after an initial Japanese Netflix premiere in June 2020. The series ran for two cours for a total of 23 episodes. Netflix began streaming the anime exclusively worldwide, outside of Japan, in August 2020.
The series also inspired a short-lived manga adaptation from June 10, 2020 to August 20, 2020. It ran in Mag Garden’s Mag Comi and LINE manga platforms, before going on indefinite hiatus.
The anime’s official website describes the synopsis as:
Masato Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler. Together with his partner Kudo, they try to trick a Frenchman in Asakusa but unexpectedly get tricked instead. The Frenchman, whom they tried to swindle, turns out to be Laurent Thierry — a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias. Edamura is yet to find out what fate awaits him, after having engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs…!
