A new PV trailer has been released for the Kitaro Tanjou: GeGeGe no Nazo anime film, which premiered in Japan on November 17, 2023.
Gou Koga (Gekijou ban Gegege no Kitaro: Nippon Bakuretsu, Digimon Universe: App Monsters) is directing the film, with Hiroyuki Yoshino (World Trigger 3rd Season series composer and scriptwriter) as scriptwriter, and Touko Yatabe (Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time co-assistant director) as character designer. Toei Animation is in charge of the animation production.
Returning cast members from the 2018 GeGeGe no Kitaro TV series include Miyuki Sawashiro as Kitaro, Masako Nozawa as Medama-oyaji, and Umeka Shouji as Neko Musume. The film also features Toshihiko Seki as Kitaro’s father in his past form and Hidenobu Kiuchi as Kitaro’s human adoptive father Mizuki.

Kitaro Tanjou: GeGeGe no Nazo is based on the 2018 GeGeGe no Kitaro anime series and will revolve around the mysteries concerning its titular character’s birth. Along with a new Akuma-kun anime, the film is one part of four total projects commemorating the late original creator Shigeru Mizuki’s 100-year anniversary after his death in 2015.
The GeGeGe no Kitaro series originated in 1960 as a rental manga series titled Hakaba Kitaro, with a manga series being released in 1965. The first anime adaptation of GeGeGe no Kitaro aired from 1968 to 1969, while the last prior to the 2018 version aired from 2007 to 2009. Another anime series based on Hakaba Kitaro aired in 2008.

Besides the various GeGeGe no Kitaro anime series and movies, the manga has also inspired live-action films, video games, and stage plays.
