The modern anime adaptation of the Rurouni Kenshin manga has announced the production of a second season, which will tackle the “Kyoto Arc” and will premiere sometime in 2024.

The “Kyoto Arc” will feature one of Himura Kenshin’s most recognizable foes: the heavily bandaged yet dauntingly formidable Shishio Makoto. As revealed at the end of Season 1, Makoto Furukawa is voicing Shishio, while Daiki Yamashita is voicing one his allies, the deadly swordsman Seta Sojiro. Other new cast additions are Aya Yamane as Misao Makimachi and Yuuichi Nakamura as Hiko Seijuro.

The first season of Rurouni Kenshin premiered in July and ran for two consecutive cours. Crunchyroll streams the show. The manga it is based on was previously adapted into a 1996 anime series and also inspired a 1997 anime movie, and three OVAs.

Viz Media describes the Rurouni Kenshin manga as:

One hundred and forty years ago in Kyoto, with he coming of the American “Black Ships,” there arose a warrior who, felling men with his bloodstained blade, gained the name Hitokiri, manslayer! His killer blade helped close the turbulent Bakumatsu era and slashed open the progressive age known as Meiji. Then he vanished, and with the flow of years, became legend.

The manga originally ran from 1994 to 1999 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. Its sequel manga Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Hen began in 2017. In November 2017, Rurouni Kenshin mangaka Nobuhiro Watsuki was referred to prosecutors for simple possession of child pornography and was fined 200,000 yen (~US$1,473.35) in 2018. Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Hen was initially suspended before resuming serialization in June 2018.
