Mamoru Kanbe (The Perfect Insider, The Promised Neverland) is directing the anime adaptation, with Toshiya Oono (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2) as series screenwriter, Atsushi Saitou (Love Live! Superstar!!) as character designer, and Takahiro Obata (The Promised Neverland) as music composer. Lapin Track is in charge of the animation production for the series.

The anime is based on the Shoshimin Series mystery novels, written by Hyouka’s Honobu Yonezawa and published by Tokyo Sogensha under its Sougen Suiri Bunko label. Four volumes have been released since December 24, 2004, with a fifth volume due out on April 26, 2024. A short story compilation was released in 2020. Emily Books Agency describes the synopsis of Shoshimin’s “The Strawberry Tart Incident” storyline as:

Jogoro Kobato and Yuki Osanai, two fifteen-year-olds in their first year of senior high school, are an unusual pair. After some unpleasant experiences at their previous school, linked to their proclivity for solving mysteries, they have agreed to adopt a new persona: that of ‘respectable types’ leading quiet, ordinary lives. However, term has barely started when a series of irresistible mysteries begin presenting themselves, and Kobato in particular can’t stop himself from solving them – especially with the help of his close friend Kengo. A missing handbag, a pair of identical paintings, a perfectly made cup of cocoa, and a mysterious shattered bottle all provide these reluctant detectives – and the reader – with plenty of mental exercise and entertainment. But when Osanai’s bicycle is stolen, along with the strawberry tart she left in its basket, the trail of clues leads the pair into unexpected danger…
