Haruko Ichikawa‘s Land of the Lustrous manga, which began in 2012 and inspired a 2017 TV anime series, will come to an end on April 25, 2024 with the June issue of Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine. Kodansha has released a short promotional video in advance of its release.

The final chapter is the series’ 108th and shares the manga’s title (Houseki no Kuni in Japanese).

Land of the Lustrous is Ichikawa’s first serialized series, following a young gem as they come of age in a world where the few of their kind are hunted by the lunarians. It has been collected into 12 tankoubon volumes as of November 2022. Six years before Land of the Lustrous started, in 2006, Ishikawa won the Shiki Grand Prize at Kodansha’s  Afternoon Shikishou 2006 Summer contest with her entry and first manga work, Mushi to Uta.

Kodansha USA describes its plot as:

In a world inhabited by crystalline lifeforms called The Lustrous, every unique gem must fight for their way of life against the threat of lunarians who would turn them into decorations. Phosphophyllite, the most fragile and brittle of gems, longs to join the battle. When Phos is instead assigned to complete a natural history of their world, it sounds like a dull and pointless task. But this new job brings Phos into contact with Cinnabar, a gem forced to live in isolation. Can Phos’s seemingly mundane assignment lead both Phos and Cinnabar to the fulfillment they desire?

The one-cour anime was produced by Orange and directed by Takahiko Kyogoku (Love Live!, Gate, Love Live! Superstar!!). Toshiya Oono (Mushoku Tensei Season 2) did the series composition while Asako Nishida (Train to the End of the World, Love Live! co-character designer) designed the characters. Eiji Inomoto (Beastars) was the chief CG director.
