Following the July 26 JST Japanese premiere of the Mononoke: Karakasa anime film, it has now been revealed that two sequels are on the way. The first of these, Mononoke Dainishou: Hinezumi, will premiere on March 14, 2025 JST.
A visual for Hinezumi was also released.
Before the proper reveal of Mononoke Dainishou: Hinezumi, the existence of a follow-up was mentioned at a July 27 JST stage greeting, during which lead voice actor Hiroshi Kamiya said that he had a recording session the very next day.
Mononoke: Karakasa was announced in June 2022 at the 15th anniversary event of the 2007 TV anime Mononoke and was originally meant to be released in 2023. The stylish supernatural horror movie once again follows the yokai-slaying Medicine Seller and takes place in the inner palace.
The Mononoke series is a spin-off of 2006’s Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, which introduced the Medicine Seller in its “Bakeneko” episodes. Takahiro Sakurai was the original voice actor of the Medicine Seller.
Crunchyroll describes the series as:
In feudal Japan, evil spirits known as mononoke plague the countryside, leaving a trail of fear in their wake. One mysterious person has the power to slay the mononoke where they stand; he is known as the Medicine Seller, and he vanquishes the spirits using the power of his Exorcism Sword. In order to draw his sword he must understand the Form, Truth and Reason of the mononoke. Armed with a sharp wit, the Medicine Seller wanders from place to place, striking down the evil spirits in his wake.
