The new director for the second season is Hiroshi Kubo (Season 1 ending animation storyboard artist and director, Magikano compositing director), with Kyoko Yufu reprising her character designer role.

Crunchyroll streamed the first series worldwide, as it aired in Japan, and will do so again for the second season.

The anime is based on the isekai fantasy light novels written by Yuri Kitayama and illustrated by Riv. The series was first published by Hobby Japan’s HJ Bunko on October 1, 2015 and has released 25 volumes as of February 2024. The series originated as a web novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro from February 12, 2014 to October 30, 2020.

The light novels have also inspired two manga adaptations, with the first manga lasting between 2016 and 2017. The second manga has run in HJ Comics’ Comic Fire magazine since July 2017. The series also inspired a browser game and radio show.

J-Novel Club release the light novels and second manga adaptation of Seirei Gensouki in English, describing the synopsis as:

Meet Rio: a callous orphaned boy living in the slums. At only 7-years-old, he realizes he’s actually the reincarnation of Haruto Amakawa, a Japanese university student with a tragic past. While still reeling from this shocking epiphany, Rio also comes to learn that he possesses extremely potent magical abilities and uses his new powers to solve the kidnapping case of a little girl. His good deed is acknowledged, and he’s rewarded by being enrolled into… a prestigious academy for noble children…?
