The upcoming Fate/EXTRA Record RPG is planned to launch in 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Steam.
The release date and platform reveal came at the end of a new trailer released as part of FGO Fes. 2024, which previews the premise, some of the characters, and deck-based combat.
Fate/EXTRA Record is a remake of the 2010 PSP dungeon RPG Fate/EXTRA, which inspired a Shaft-produced anime adaptation titled Fate/EXTRA Last Encore. It will feature tweaks to the scenario and improved character graphics in addition to the aforementioned deck element. Bandai Namco Entertainment is publishing it.
Like many entries in the Fate franchise, Fate/EXTRA has Masters and Servants and a Holy Grail War. However, its story features a virtual world, and its Holy Grail War is called the Moon Holy Grail War.
Western publisher Ghostlight describes the original Fate/EXTRA‘s premise as:
Waking up in a strange virtual world with no recollection of the past, the main character finds themselves forced to fight for survival in a war they do not understand for a prize beyond value; the opportunity to have one’s wish granted. With only an enigmatic “Servant” by their side, the protagonist will have to face both friends and foes in battles to the death in order to not only gain possession of a mysterious object known as the “Holy Grail”, but also to find the answer to the most important question of all: “Who am I?”
The Last Encore introduction contains more details on the moon aspect of Fate/EXTRA‘s setting:
This is a story of EXTRA that will unfold on a forgotten moon.
The Mooncell Automaton, a spiritron computer that exists on the moon, grants any and all wishes.
A virtual spiritron world created within the Mooncell is SE.RA.PH. With the “Holy Grail” on the line,
Wizards and Servants must now wage a brand new Holy Grail War of the Moon.
