Hideaki Sorachi’s original sci-fi comedy manga series was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from December 8, 2003 to September 15, 2018. It then moved to Jump Giga from December 28, 2018 to February 22, 2019. The manga completed its publication in the free Gintama app from May 13, 2019 to June 20, 2019. Seventy-seven tankobon volumes were released in total. VIZ Media released the manga’s first 23 tankobon volumes in English until 2011.

The manga series inspired a long-running TV anime series consisting of several seasons, as well as three anime films, OVAs, event anime specials, two live-action films, and a live-action web miniseries. An anime adaptation of the 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei spin-off light novels is set to premiere in 2025.
Crunchyroll is streaming the Gintama anime series, describing the main synopsis as:
In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions.
