This is the latest anime project inspired by Riyoko Ikeda’s historical romance manga of the same name. It ran in Shueisha’s Margaret magazine from May 21, 1972 to December 23, 1973 under the Margaret Comics label. Ten tankobon volumes were released in total. Udon Entertainment licensed the manga for release in English.

A revival of the manga series, The Rose of Versailles: Episodes, was released in the same magazine from 2013 to 2018, with four volumes released in total.

The manga previously inspired a 1979-1980 TV anime series and the 1990 anime film The Rose of Versailles: I’ll Love You As Long As I Live, produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (now TMS Entertainment).

The manga also inspired a 1979 live-action film titled Lady Oscar, a musical by the Takarazuka Revue Company, a sequel, and spin-offs. A pilot for a new anime movie was shown at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2007.
