Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective is based on the series of books written by Mikito Chinen and illustrated by Noizi Ito, with the first two episodes set to feature original material written by Chinen. The protagonist Takao Ameku is a brilliant doctor at Tenikai General Hospital’s special department that deals with tricky-to-diagnose cases.

The first Ameku Takao book was released in October 2014, and 13 more volumes were published by Shinchosha between then and 2022. In October 2023, Jitsugyo no Nihonsha announced that it would be releasing three new volumes and 13 kanzenbans across seven consecutive months. Another new entry, Entrapped in the Poisoned Prison: Ameku Takao’s Crime Karte, was released in October 2024 to commemorate the series’ 10th anniversary.

An Ameku Takao’s Detective Kare manga adaptation drawn by Hiroki Ohara ran from 2016 to 2018 and was collected into four tankoubon volumes. A Kodansha-published manga adaptation of the Angel of Death in the Sphere volume by Eri Takanashi began this year.
