The main voice cast and staff have been unveiled for the upcoming new Anne of Green Gables TV anime adaptation, Anne Shirley, which has also been confirmed to have 24 total episodes. The series is scheduled to begin broadcasting in Japan on NHK E-Tele in April 2025.
Hiroshi Kawamata (Shimajiro to Ehon no Kuni) is directing the series, with Kenichi Tsuchiya (The Garden of Words) as the series’ character designer. The Answer Studio is handling the animation production.
Meanwhile, the main voice cast for Anne Shirley stars:
- • Honoka Inoue as Anne Shirley
- • Aya Nakamura as Marilla Cuthbert
- • Yasunori Matsumoto as Matthew Cuthbert
- • Naoya Miyase as Gilbert Blythe
- • Yume Miyamoto as Diana Barry
The new anime will be based on three of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables books: Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, and Anne of the Island.
A new manga adaptation was launched on January 5, 2025, illustrated by Akane Hoshikubo.
The book series previously inspired a 1979 anime series — directed by the late Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya) — and 2009’s Konnichiwa Anne: Before Green Gables, which were both released under Nippon Animation’s World Masterpiece Theater brand.
The new anime adaptation will showcase Anne’s growth from a young girl to a mature woman. It will focus on her bond with the elderly siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, her lifelong friendship with Diana Barry, and her budding romance with Gilbert Blythe.
