A new key visual and teaser PV trailer have been revealed for the upcoming Anne Shirley TV anime series, which will begin broadcasting in Japan on the NHK Education TV channel on April 5, 2025. The new adaptation, based on the Anne of Green Gables book series, will run for a total of 24 episodes.

Hiroshi Kawamata (Shimajiro to Ehon no Kuni) is directing the anime, with Kenichi Tsuchiya (The Garden of Words) as the series’ character designer. The Answer Studio is in charge of the animation production.
Other newly revealed staff include Yuji Watanabe (Armored Trooper Votoms: Pailsen Files animation director) and Naoko Saito (Your Name key animator) as the animation directors, Tadashi Kudo (The Heroic Legend of Arslan, Blade of the Immortal [2019]) as art director, Shiho Kuriki (Phi-Brain – Puzzle of God) as color key artist and color designer, Shinji Saito (City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust film) as compositing director of photography, Kisuke Koizumi (My Happy Marriage season 1 and 2, Listeners)) as sound director, and Michiru Oshima (Little Witch Academia) as music composer.
Meanwhile, the main voice cast for Anne Shirley stars:
- • Honoka Inoue as Anne Shirley
- • Aya Nakamura as Marilla Cuthbert
- • Yasunori Matsumoto as Matthew Cuthbert
- • Naoya Miyase as Gilbert Blythe
- • Yume Miyamoto as Diana Barry
The 2025 anime series will be based on three of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s original Anne of Green Gables books: Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, and Anne of the Island.
A new manga adaptation was launched on January 5, 2025, illustrated by Akane Hoshikubo.
The book series previously inspired a 1979 anime series — directed by the late Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya) — and 2009’s Konnichiwa Anne: Before Green Gables, which were both released under Nippon Animation’s World Masterpiece Theater brand.

The new anime series will showcase Anne’s growth from a young girl to a mature woman. It will center on her bond with the elderly siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, her lifelong friendship with Diana Barry, and her budding romance with Gilbert Blythe.
