A fourth season of the A Certain Scientific Railgun TV anime adaptation has been announced. Tatsuyuki Nagai (previous seasons, Fureru., Anohana) is returning as director for the J.C.STAFF production, which is “coming soon.”
The main cast once again consists of Rina Sato as the Railgun Misaka Mikoto, Satomi Arai as Kuroko Shirai, Aki Toyosaki as Kazari Uiharu, and Kanae Ito as Ruiko Saten.
A Certain Scientific Railgun is based on the KADOKAWA-published manga written by Kazuma Kamachi and drawn by Motoi Fuyukawa with character designs from Kiyotaka Haimura. The manga, which is a spin-off of Kamachi’s A Certain Magical Index light novel series (which Haimura illustrates for), debuted in 2007 in Monthly Comic Dengeki Daiou and has 19 tankoubon volumes as of March 2024.
Seven Seas Entertainment describes the premise as:
Welcome to a world where mysticism and science collide, and supernatural powers are derived from either science or religion. At the heart of this world is Academy City, an advanced metropolis whose population is comprised mostly of students. The majority of students are enrolled in the city’s “Power Curriculum Program,” where they must learn to master their latent psychic powers. Out of several million students, only seven are deemed powerful enough to have Level 5 status.
Meet Mikoto Misaka, the third most powerful Level 5 esper in Academy City. Together with her best friend Kuroko Shirai and the other members of Judgment, a student-run law enforcement agency, Mikoto delves deep into the dark heart of the scientific sprawl she calls home, and uncovers secrets she wishes she hadn’t!
The first season of A Certain Scientific Railgun aired in 2009, with the second season, A Certain Scientific Railgun, premiering in 2013. The third season, A Certain Scientific Railgun T, came out in 2020.
