2010’s Akage no Anne ~Green Gables e no Michi~, a theatrical compilation of the late Isao Takahata‘s 1979 Anne of Green Gables anime series that consists of the first six episodes, is returning to theaters in Japan on May 30, 2025 JST.

The revival screening was first announced on April 3 JST. A trailer was released today on April 15 JST.

The new screening of Akage no Anne ~Green Gables e no Michi~, which will last for two weeks, is part of distributor Filmarks‘ revival screening project, which has included re-screenings of anime like Ocean Waves and Vampire Hunter D. It will also serve to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Nippon Animation.

Coincidentally, Akage no Anne ~Green Gables e no Michi~‘s return overlaps with the airing of the new Anne Shirley anime, which premiered on April 5 JST.

Takahata’s Anne of Green Gables was a World Masterpiece Theater title and ran for 50 episodes. The Akage no Anne ~Green Gables e no Michi~ compilation was originally created in 1989 with the supervision of Takahata, who not only directed the series but wrote its scripts.

The anime is based on Lucy Maud Montgomery‘s classic Anne of Green Gables novel, which was first published in 1908 and received several sequels. The book’s synopsis reads:

This heartwarming story has beckoned generations of readers into the special world of Green Gables, an old-fashioned farm outside a town called Avonlea. Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old orphan, has arrived in this verdant corner of Prince Edward Island only to discover that the Cuthberts—elderly Matthew and his stern sister, Marilla—want to adopt a boy, not a feisty redheaded girl. But before they can send her back, Anne—who simply must have more scope for her imagination and a real home—wins them over completely. A much-loved classic that explores all the vulnerability, expectations, and dreams of a child growing up, Anne of Green Gables is also a wonderful portrait of a time, a place, a family… and, most of all, love.
