It was filmed and produced in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Other executive producers for the series include Jeff F. King, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Jon Rutherford, and Nick Nantell.

Miku Martineau is headlining the series’ cast as the protagonist Yumeko. Other cast members in undisclosed roles include:

  • • Ayo Solanke
  • • Eve Edwards
  • • Clara Alexandrova
  • • Hunter Cardinal
  • • Anwen O’Driscoll
  • • Aviva Mongillo
  • • Ryan Sutherland

Netflix describes the main premise of the live-action series as:

At a private school where gambling determines social status, a mysterious new student with a tragic past is shaking things up — and betting on revenge.

The original Kakegurui manga series, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura, began serialization in Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine on March 22, 2014. Nineteen tankobon volumes have been released as of March 2025. A spinoff prequel manga titled Kakegurui Twin, illustrated by Kei Saiki, was released in 2015 and concluded in 2023. Yen Press releases the main manga in English as Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler –, as well as the prequel spinoff.

The manga inspired two TV anime seasons that aired in 2017 and 2019 respectively. It also inspired a 2018 live-action Japanese TV drama that aired for two seasons, two Japanese live-action films, light novels, and a now defunct mobile game that launched in 2017.

Yen Press describes the main synopsis of the original Kakegurui manga as:

Hyakkaou Private Academy. An institution for the privileged with a very peculiar curriculum. You see, when you’re the sons and daughters of the wealthiest of the wealthy, it’s not athletic prowess or book smarts that keep you ahead. It’s reading your opponent, the art of the deal. What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling? At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like!
