Two Gintama anime films will be receiving 4DX screenings in Japan later this year in summer and fall, respectively. The selected films set for release in 4DX are 2013’s Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter – Be Forever Yorozuya in Summer 2025 and 2021’s Gintama: The Very Final in Fall 2024.

An official visual and a trailer for the screenings have been released, with the latter being narrated by Tachiki Fumihiko, who voices Taizo Hasegawa in the Gintama series. The 4DX screenings are part of the franchise’s “Gintama on Theater” 20th anniversary celebration.

Three compilation films of the Gintama TV anime series were previously released, including Gintama on Theater 2D: Thorny Arc in November 2023, Gintama on Theater 2D: Ikkoku Keisei-hen in June 2024, and Gintama on Theater 2D: Kintama-hen in November 2024. An upcoming spinoff anime series titled 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei is expected to broadcast in October 2025.

Hideaki Sorachi’s original sci-fi comedy manga series was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from December 8, 2003 to September 15, 2018. It then moved to Jump Giga from December 28, 2018 to February 22, 2019. The manga completed its publication in the free Gintama app from May 13, 2019 to June 20, 2019. A total of 77 tankobon volumes were released. VIZ Media released the manga’s first 23 tankobon volumes in English until 2011.

The manga inspired a long-running TV anime series consisting of several seasons, as well as three anime films, OVAs, specials, two live-action films, and a live-action web miniseries.

Crunchyroll is streaming the Gintama anime series outside of Japan, describing the main synopsis as:

In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions.
