A TV anime adaptation of the Nippon Sangoku manga, which takes place in a near-future Japan that has entered a new Warring States era, has been announced with an April premiere window.
Kazuaki Terasawa (The Ancient Magus Bride Season 2) is directing the anime at Studio Kafka, with character designs and chief animation direction from Takahiro Abiru (Vinland Saga). The cast includes Kensho Ono as Aoteru Misumi, Asami Seto as Saki Higashimachi, Takashi Nagasako as Denki Taira, and Megumi Han as the narrator.
Here’s the synopsis:
In a near-future Japan where civilization has regressed due to nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt governance.
The nation fractures into three, plunging into a new Three Kingdoms era as each vies for supremacy.
Aoteru Misumi, once an obscure local bureaucrat, sets his sights on the reunification of Japan.
Armed with vast knowledge and exceptional eloquence, he steadily rises.
The legend of the man later known as the prodigious strategist begins now.
A trailer and visual for Nippon Sangoku were released with the announcement. The former reveals a distinctive aesthetic and features events like Saki having a light moment in a wedding dress, now considered a relic of the past, and a darker moment where Aoteru and Saki witness a man being dismembered by horses.
The original manga by Ikka Matsuki began in November 2021 and is serialized on Shogakukan’s Manga ONE. There are six volumes as of November 2024.
