The X/Twitter account of the 2026 The Ghost in the Shell TV anime has announced a new The Ghost in the Shell anime project, once again produced by Science SARU.

Staff and story details are currently unknown, but an announcement visual potentially offers some clues for the latter:

The new project was originally revealed via flyers distributed at a press preview session for the OPEN HOUSE public event at Tokyo’s DOVER STREET MARKET GINZA. Exclusive The Ghost in the Shell apparel (a collaboration with GEEKS RULE) are set to be sold there when it launches on October 24.

Directed by Mokochan (DAN DA DAN Season 1 assistant director), The Ghost in the Shell is the latest adaptation of the cyberpunk manga by Shirow Masamune, and one that sought to adhere more closely to the source material. Its synopsis reads:

The year is 2029. In near-future Japan, where the world has become highly information-intensive, with a vast corporate network covering the planet, electrons and light pulsing through it. But the nation-state and ethnic groups still survive. Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg, leads an elite combat unit, including Batou. While commanding her team, Kusanagi envisions the creation of a specialized task force to preemptively strike against emerging threats. Meanwhile, Daisuke Aramaki of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who had been planning to establish a similar unit, recruited Kusanagi and her team. Together, they begin operations as Public Security Section 9—an offensive tactical unit known as “Shell Squad.” As they confront complex cybercrimes and international conspiracies, the existence of a mysterious, unidentified hacker known as The “Puppet Master” emerges on the horizon of their investigation. What fate awaits Kusanagi? And what is the Puppet Master’s true objective? A new era of cyberpunk action begins.

The original manga made its debut in the May 1989 issue of Young Magazine Kaizokuban, a special supplement of Kodansha’s seinen magazine Young Magazine. It was followed by The Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor and The Ghost in the Shell: Man-Machine Interface. The more recent Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn and Glitch Witch serve to tell “the story of the Puppet Master – until he begins to want to merge with Motoko Kusanagi.”

The first of the previous anime adaptations was the Mamoru Oshii film Ghost in the Shell, which received a sequel titled Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Other takes on the manga include Kenji Kamiyama‘s Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV anime (along with its second season and sequel movie), the pseudo-sequel Ghost in the Shell: Arise films with a younger Motoko, and the 3DCG Stand Alone Complex sequel Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Production I.G produced these titles, with SOLA DIGITAL ARTS assisting for SAC_2045.

The Ghost in the Shell is streaming on Prime Video.
