A teaser trailer, main voice cast, and opening theme song have been revealed for the upcoming The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All TV anime series, which will premiere in Japan in January 2027.
The trailer announced that the anime’s opening theme is the 1991 single “Breed” by American grunge rock band Nirvana.
Masashi Ishihama (Horimiya, From the New World) is directing the anime series, with Rino Yamasaki (The Fragrant Flowers Bloom with Dignity) as series composer and Kanna Hirayama (OSHI NO KO Seasons 1-3) as character designer. CloverWorks is handling the animation production.
Meanwhile, the anime’s main voice cast will star Mariya Ise as Mitsuki Koga and Akari Kito as Aya Osawa.
Crunchyroll also confirmed during its showcase panel at Anime Expo 2026 that it will stream the anime series.
The slice of life yuri manga series by Sumiko Arai originally began as a web manga posted on X/Twitter on April 10, 2022. It began serialization on Pixiv Comic on April 29, 2023. Kadokawa Shoten has published the series in print in Japan under its Kitora imprint and four tankobon volumes as of February 2026.
The manga was the winner of the Next Manga Awards 2023 web manga category and Best New Manga at the 2nd American Manga Awards.
Yen Press licensed the The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All manga for English release, describing the main synopsis as:
Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya falls head over heels for an employee at a local CD shop. He’s got an air of mystery about him, great style, and an impeccable music taste. Little does she know—this supposedly male employee is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! Mitsuki generally keeps to herself, but since her seat is right next to Aya’s, she can’t help but be extremely aware of the other’s crush. Revealing the truth is out of the question for Mitsuki—but perhaps getting closer to Aya wouldn’t be so bad…
